Can you make us a logo?
We get this question almost everyday, and every time we give the same answer “sure, who is your target market?” About 8 out of 10 people do not know how to answer that question. The other 2 know what their market is, but haven’t got a clue how to reach them.
Your logo will be what identifies your company to your target market. Depending on how big your market or how small your target market will be is important to the details that will go into your logo.
Example#1 If you have a very large target market that crosses various demographics then you may want to consider a more simplified look. The logo you see here is pretty simple and has elements that go along with the services of the company. Since their company sends equipment all over the caribbean and the Americas their market is huge and cross cultural. So a logo that shows what they do was crucial to reach people that spoke different languages.
Example #2 This logo was made for a beauty salon in a neighborhood with a very large Cuban community. If you know anything about Latino areas you’ll know that the men and women rarely cross domains. The men have their spots to get a hair cut and women have theirs. So for us it was easy to pick more feminine colors and include a graphic with a woman’s hair. If the salon was in a different area we would have made the logo a little more unisex.
Example #3 This logo was created for a basketball training program. They targeted boy and girls age 12 - 16 so it had to have a street/urban appeal. Most kids that play basketball fall under the market that would also like hip-hop and wear Air Jordans. So we made sure we added a graffiti style font and a mirror accent for flair. Making logos for the younger demographic is tough and can be tricky. Styles change fast and what’s in today is considered “old school” tomorrow. This logo is strong, but Im sure will need updating in 6 months.
Here are a few more tips before deciding on a logo:
• Don’t use clip art! There are tons of ideas that can go well for logos in any industry. Use something fresh and new. Chances are the clip art you like has already been used 1000 times before.
• Write down the 5 logos that you can remember off the top of your head. Ask yourself what makes them great? Now think of your company and what is unique. Take these ideas and start thinking of visuals that go along with these ideas. Get it down to the top 3 and go from there.
• View through logo galleries. There are millions of logos on the internet and you can find most of them in logo companies portfolios. Look through them and get inspired, but do not steal. Ideas are endless so pave your own road to logoville.
Till next time.
